How to Increase Memory Available to Photoshop

There are times in which our filters may seem to run slowly on larger images. There are a number of reasons why this could be, but the best place to start is by increasing the amount of memory that gets allocated to Photoshop.

When you are running Photoshop (Windows), go to Edit > Preferences > Performance (Photoshop CS3, otherwise it's labeled as Memory & Image Cache) or for the Macintosh, go to Photoshop > Preferences > Performance (Photoshop CS3, otherwise it's labeled as Memory & Image Cache). A little window will appear that will allow you to allocate more of the system's memory to Photoshop. You will need to restart Photoshop for this new adjustment to take place.
